The Meaning of Place

The importance of a place holds different meanings for different people. For some, it’s the company - who is there to make you feel your best and safe. For others, it’s the physical - all the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that they experience there. Either way, we can all agree that the experience of a place holds weight in our memories. As we exist and become comfortable or experience positive discomfort somewhere, we grow into the person we are meant to be. As we continue our lives and discover new places we figure out the place that truly feels like home, it may have been a short trip to a new country or a small state where we lived long ago.

This Art Direction project was inspired by graphic designer Paula Scher’s map artwork where she incorporates different information about a place into lines that come together to resemble a chaotic but beautiful depiction of a region. We took her work as inspiration and created our own “maps” of places we felt were most important to us. These range from a childhood home, somewhere you went on vacation, to even your own mind. Together, they represent how impactful a place is on who we become. The most magical part is that we have the opportunity to hold on to these places in our own mind and picture ourselves there whenever we need it.

Powder to the People

Skiing is my purest form of happiness. The mountains have a way of humbling and freeing you at the same time. There’s nothing that compares to the euphoric feeling of being on the mountain, the cold air hitting my face, and the quiet focus it brings. I’ve been skiing in Vail every year for the past ten years, and I know the slopes like the back of my hand. From the back bowls to the tree runs, every part of the mountain holds a memory. It’s the one place where I feel completely free, and no matter how many times I go, it never gets old.
